Principal’s Report 1/24/14
Dear Lumen Christi,
Today was a wonderful kick-off to the upcoming Catholic Schools Week! The students and parent chaperones enjoyed an “All School” field trip to see the musical production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat at West High School. At the Assembly on Monday the students will recite the Rosary at St. Benedict Parish.
On Wednesday, January 29 the school will have a slightly different schedule. As part of ‘Catholic Schools’ week, Lumen will join all of the local Catholic High Schools at St. Elizabeth’s for Mass. Wednesday will be a “B” schedule day. We will leave Lumen at 1:00 PM. Mass will not end until 3:00 PM, so the students will not return to Lumen until about 3:30 PM. Please let the parents who do not read the Lumen news know, as to prevent extra wait time at the school. Also, if you would prefer your student to be picked up at SEAS, please let me know.
On Saturday, February 1, Don Jose’s Restaurant plans to donate all proceeds to the local Catholic Schools, including Lumen. Please plan to have dinner, support the school, and enjoy a wonderful meal. If you would like more details, we have flyers at the front desk.
We have a new member of our Lumen staff. Mrs. Jessica Estes has accepted the position to support the Catholic ministry of our school at the front desk, after the recent departure of Mrs. Katie Roche. Mrs. Estes will start on Monday, February 10. Mrs. Estes comes to us from another school in Anchorages where she filled the same role. Mrs. Estes and her family are parishioners at St. Elizabeth’s Parish. In the interim, Ms. Savannah Lorenz and Ms. Peggy Witzleben will cover the desk. Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Estes to our Lumen staff – and in thanking both Ms. Lorenz and Ms. Witzleben for their assistance at the school.
For those heading on the basketball trip next weekend, it is the “Kenai Super Trip”. Please wish our Archangels good luck. The games are as follows:
January 29 – Nikolaevsk
January 30 – Ninilchik
January 31 – Cook Inlet Academy, Soldotna
We also have a trip to Seldovia coming up February 7-8. Away games are a lot of fun and it’s great to see fans in the stands. Please travel to support the teams, if your schedules permit.

We will continue to remind you about the he Lumen Winter Wonderland Gala. We sent out mailings last week. We highly encourage you to attend and participate in making the event a success. It is one of the primary fundraisers to offset school expenses as we provide our students a quality faith-based education. Please contact the Gala Committee at gala@lumenchristiak.org or 907-273-1530 for further information on how you can assist with the event and/or help us sell corporate tables.
One of the elements that makes the Lumen Winter Wonderland Gala a success is the gift baskets. Gift baskets always sell well at our Gala and we would love each family to consider donating a basket. You don’t have to put it together and make it look beautiful… just leave it up to the basket committee to do it for you! Themes can be almost anything from wine & cheese, to gardening, hobbies, coffee, movies, etc. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. LeAndra Childs or Mrs. Jessica Estes.
The other great fundraiser for the school is the annual campaign fund called the Lumenary Drive. These are tax-deductible donations to the school. We have now raised $37,381.00 and are over half way to the $70,000.00 goal mark. Please help us reach our goal! If you work for a company that matches donations, let us know. We encourage you to reach out to grandparents and other family members to help support the Lumen Christi mission. The monies we collect go directly to the school to help with teacher salaries, academics, and building maintenance. Any amount large or small is put to good use. Checks can be dropped off at the front desk.
Finally, let’s support the Youth Group at St. Benedicts. Students interested in travelling to World Youth Day (WYD) with the St. Benedict group can attend a meeting at 1:00 PM this Sunday, Jan. 26th in the Upper Room (at LCHS). For those interested in the service trip to the orphanage in Jamaica, there is a youth and parent meeting at 2:00 PM, in the Upper Room after the WYD meeting. Each year, St. Benedict forms a ‘Truth Pursuit’ team that competes against other parishes. The team studies various categories and then comes together for the tournament on April 5th. Please stop by at 2:00 PM this Sunday at the Upper Room to get details and categories on this event as well. Finally, don’t forget about the Youth Nights in the Upper Room every Wednesday from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM.
Thank you all for your support of Lumen!
